[EDCA] Umer and Hamid Hayat, father and son in Lodi, California, convicted of providing material support to Al Qaeda and making false statements to the government. Hamid Hayat was sentenced to 24 years in prison. In February 2013, a federal appeals court upheld the Hamid Hayat conviction and sentence.On July 30, 2019, a federal judge vacated Hamid Hayat's conviction and sentence because of ineffective defense representation by his original defense attorney. The order means Hayat's appellate attorneys can seek his immediate release from a federal prison in Phoenix, where he had been serving his 24-year sentence.
