US v. Al-Hanooti, Muthanna
Detroit, MI
Foreign Agent for Iraq
[EDMI] A federal indictment in March 2008 accused Iraqi American Muthanna Al-Hanooti of working as a spy for the Iraqi government under Saddam Hussein. Al-Hanooti worked for Life for Relief and Development (LIFE), a Southfield charity raided by federal agents in September 2006. He earlier headed the Michigan branch of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR). In March 2011 Al-Hanooti was sentenced to serve a year and a day in prison after he pleaded guilty to violating U.S. sanctions against Iraq when he received the rights to 2 million barrels of oil in exchange for helping Saddam Hussein's government.
