State of Arizona v. Francis, Glen Cusford
Tucson, AZ

Jamaat ul-Fuqra

In December 2012, a Pima County jury found Glen Cusford Francis guilty in the 1990 murder of Rashad Khalifa. Khalifa, an Egyptian biochemist and imam at a mosque in Tucson, AZ, was alleged to be killed because of his religious teachings. After studying the Quran for years, Khalifa found a mathematical code that led him to believe that two verses from the Quran were satanic. On Feb. 27, 1989, the 11th Majlis al-Fuqaha (Council of Religious Scholars) met in Mecca and branded Khalifa an infidel. Francis is believed to be tied to the radical Jamaat ul-Fuqra.
