On March 9, 1977 a group of 12 armed men, all African American converts who called themselves Hanafi Muslims (a more traditional form of Sunni Islam) seized three buildings in Washington, DC, including the Islamic Center, City Council chambers, and the headquarters of B'nai B'rith, America's oldest Jewish organization. The men, led by Hamaas Abdil Khaalis, took about 150 people hostage. All 12 men were convicted with Khaalis receiving 21 to 120 years.
