US v. Mubayyid, Muhamed, et ano.
Boston, MA
Al Qaeda
[DMA] A federal jury in January 2008 found Emadeddin Muntasser along with associates Muhammad Mubayyid and Samir al-Monla guilty of deceiving the government to grant tax-exempt status to the now-defunct Boston-based charity, Care international. A U.S. district court judge however overturned the verdict of guilty on the main conspiracy charge of hiding the charity's pro-jihadist activities, saying evidence did not back the verdict. Both the government and the defendants appealed the verdict and the First Circuit yesterday issued an opinion that reversed the district court's acquittal of the defendants on the conspiracy count, reinstated the jury's verdict and affirmed the defendants' other conviction.
