USA v. Babafemi, Lawal Olaniyi
Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP)
[EDNY] Lawal Olaniyi Babafemi, a Nigerian citizen, pleaded guilty to conspiring to provide and providing material support to al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), the Yemen branch of al Qaeda. Court records show Babafemi traveled to Nigeria to train with leaders of the terrorist group. He also assisted in AQAP's English-language media operations, which include the publication of the magazine Inspire. The AQAP leadership provided almost $9,000 in cash to Babafemi recruit other English-speakers from Nigeria to join that group. In August 2015, Babfemi was sentenced to 22 years in prison for conspiring to provide material support to AQAP.
