Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP)
[EDNY] Marcos Alonso Zea, also known as "Ali Zea," an American citizen and resident of Brentwood, New York, pled guilty to attempting to provide material support to al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, also known as Ansar al-Sharia (collectively "AQAP"), and obstruction of justice. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison for attempting to join AQAP. Zea's co-conspirator, Justin Kaliebe, also attempted to travel from the United States to Yemen for the purpose of joining AQAP and waging jihad. He pleaded guilty to providing material support to the Al Qaeda affiliate. Kaliebe was sentenced to 13 years in prison for attempting to join AQAP.
