Sixty years ago,for every bank teller in front the were five people in the back doing the reconcilliation, interbank, ledgers and what not. Today they are gone, one'computer system does it all. The same in most industries. I spent hours paging through the airline ABC trying to find connections and best fares. Just as many hours with international telephone operators trying to make calls, once, in East Africa, it tokk me 8 hours to get a call through to Italy. Payroll was a nightmare.

In industry and government it is the same story, so why the need for more people. Simple. Every penny paid to the government in terms of taxes and contributions for our old age gets spent as fast as they get it and they need an ever increasing peons to keep the mills going because with this ever decreasing need for labour in the rest of the economy only the government has found need to increase their numbers. Not for the sake of efficiency but for control.
